UFC 200 Jose Aldo vs Frankie Edgar – Betting Preview.
Their first encounter was a fantastic 5 rounder back in 2013, earning them both the FOTN bonus. It wasn’t totally one sided but it was a clear Aldo victory reflected in the scorecards. This time, however, expect to see a very different fight.
There couldn’t be a better time for Edgar to fight Aldo. Aldo was flatlined back in December, not TKO’d, out cold, saved only by ref Big John McCarthy. Ronda Rousey has done the smart thing after her devastating loss to Holly Holm in November by taking time off to rest. How many times have we seen fighters come back too soon & seen their ability to take shots diminished? Take Chad Mendes, dropped with the piston left hand from McGregor in July then going on to fight Frankie Edgar in December, only to get KO’d with a short left hand. I’d have liked to see Aldo wait a little longer and fight later into 2016. He of course is keen to get back in and avenge the heartbreaking end to his Featherweight reign, but coming back this soon could be a real problem.
Edgar comes into this fight in the form of his life. You have to wonder what more he has to do to get a crack at the real belt after defeating the likes of Cub Swanson, BJ Penn, Urijah Faber & Chad Mandes. If he wins this he puts himself in the best position to have a shot at the full FW Belt.
I’d love to see Aldo win this fight & get another crack at McGregor. It does seem less and less likely with Conor now fighting at 170 & keen to avoid the brutal weight cut, but alas, we can hope. More likely is the winner of this fight fighting Max Holloway for the real FW Belt in late 2016. (Max Holloway currently at 5/1 to be FW Champ at the end of 2016 if you’re feeling adventurous.)
The lines for this fight are right down the middle, but go with Frankie Edgar to get the business done on the night.
Worth a punt: Edgar by KO/TKO or DQ – 17/4
The pick: Edgar to win – Evens
