David Haye returns to the ring
David Haye has officially announced his return to the Heavyweight boxing scene. He will face Australian Mark De Mori (don’t worry I haven’t either) at the O2 arena on January 16th. Watch the full press conference courtesy of IFL TV below.
He had been hinting at a comeback over the last 2 years or so, keeping active on social media and TV, but never giving a concrete answer as to whether he was going to make his return. This made many people, myself included, frustrated at the air of mystery over whether he was genuinely injured or just wanted to keep people’s interest in him spiked.
This time it’s official. Barring another injury he will face off against Mark De Mori (Full record), an Aussie that has lost only once and boasts an impressive 26 KOs from 30 wins. It’s clear, however, that he hasn’t fought anyone of real note and knocks out part timers – such as Radenko Kovac back in May that has a record of 3-7 (All losses by KO). He hasn’t lost since 2004 and hopefully will at least throw something back at Haye.
De Mori only has a puncher’s chance in this matchup. Odds have Haye at 1/20 for the win. This fight will most likely be 1 of 2 or 3 warm up fights for Haye before stepping back in with the elite at both domestic and world level. And what a time for the Hayemaker to return. One can almost see the dollar signs in his eyes, a sold out stadium next summer against the likes of Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua or Dillian Whyte, Deontay Wilder or even a rematch with Klitschko would undoubtedly be a sell out and bring in huge PPV numbers.
Whether or not Haye will be as powerful and fast as he was in his last fight against Chisora back in 2012 remains to be seen, but he enters the scene again at a very exciting time and if he can stay injury free I think we can expect to see him with a World title in the next 18 months.
