Tony Johnson MMA – Interview

We asked Bellator Heavyweight Tony Johnson some questions before his fight with MMA veteran Cheick Kongo this Friday.

Hi Tony, thanks for answering some questions for!

Under a week now until you square off against MMA veteran Cheick Kongo! How has your preparation been for this fight, and what is a typical day for Tony Johnson leading up to a fight?

Preparations for this fight were good. Stayed physically and mentally focused on the task at hand. A typical day – get up, get my daughters ready for the day, go to the gym for strength and conditioning from 10am-12pm, swimming from 2pm-3:30pm and then depending on the day grappling or striking at night. I do that 6 days a week Saturday I rest and Sunday I spar and grapple.

Cheick Kongo has fought the elite at Heavyweight (Frank Mir, Travis Browne, Cain Velasquez & Matt Mitrione). Do you see this as the toughest test in your career so far?

Absolutely I do. I see every fight in front of me as the toughest test of my career. But definitely this one is.

You have only fought 4 times in the last 4 years. Could you explain why you haven’t been as active as perhaps you would have liked to be?

People are afraid to fight me. I am a tough fighter I am a dangerous fighter and people want to protect their records.

The Heavyweight division is the most dangerous & unpredictable division in MMA & there doesn’t seem to be much separating the top #15 in the world. What is your opinion on the current state of the HW scene & where do you rank yourself amongst it?

It’s cut throat in the Heavyweight division. One loss and you can drop dramatically. One of the toughest things in the HW division is retaining the belt, as you see most HW’s lose the belt after a fight or two. I want to win it and defend it time and time again.

Is the UFC the eventual goal for you?

To be the best you have to fight the best. I want to fight the best of the best and I’m willing to fight them wherever they are.

What did you make of the whole CM Punk fiasco?

CM punk is not good for the sport. Daniel Cormier worked his whole career to make half a million dollars on UFC 200 and this guy comes in with no real fighting record and makes it right off the bat. It hurts the legitimacy of the sport.

If you could play Matchmaker and put ONE fight together for a mega-event, who would you put together and why?!

I would love to see Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar. Frankie is like a modern day Rocky. He’s tough, has good angles and has worked his way up. Conor hits hard, and puts on a great show.

If MMA was outlawed and you were forced to find another career, what would it be and why?

I would open a gym specially for troubled youth. I enjoy coaching, teaching and helping the community.

What famous person that you don’t like would you want to be put in a cage with & why?!

Is Matt Mitrione famous??? If so him. Basically I just don’t like the guy.

What are your favourite things to do outside of MMA?

Sit on my couch and watch TV.

If you had to describe yourself in one sentence, what would it be & why?

Thanks Tony and best of luck on Friday.
